| Profile of Club Officers | |
| Our club officers are:
- - Captain: Charlie Johnson I have over 30 years with Schlumberger, in a variety of technical, management and HR roles. After a number of traumatic experiences involving bicycles in my youth, I was drawn back into cycling about six years ago by neighborhood friends as a way to get back into shape. Some of my first memories of cycling include running flat out into a brick school wall on my first attempt to ride a bike (Dad forgot to tell me about coaster brakes), and waking up in the hospital with a concussion after trying to ride my new bike on the icy sidewalks of my hometown in December (before helmets were invented). Some may say these early experiences have carried through to my current cycling style.
Through cycling with neighbors and friends I've made through SCC, I have developed a real passion and love of the sport. I like nothing better than being on a bike on the open road. I'm in the best shape of my life, and I plan to be cycling when I'm 100. Over the years, I've drawn family and friends to ride with me on new adventures; cycling in Tuscany, the Rocky Mountains, and the Finger Lakes of New York. I completed my first MS150 in 2004. My wife rode in the MS150 for two years and our daughter, Kelsey, trained and rode with me in the 2008 MS150. I really believe "any day on a bike is a good day" and that we need to count our blessings for every opportunity to ride, so "Be thankful for every ride. Especially the next one!"
- Treasurer: Randy Hansen It all started back in 1999 compelled by the personal challenge to complete the MS150. I joined the SCC and started training that January together with my son, Luke, who had recently been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I only just managed to complete that first MS150 and was hobbled by the pain in my knees after the event for more than a week, but I was hooked. Soon I was riding regularly and improving my skills and endurance. The SCC has been a great vehicle for me to pursue this cycling passion. More recently I have branched out into running and swimming competing in many local triathlons, the Houston Marathon and completing Ironman Arizona in April 2008. Three consecutive trips with other SCC members to ride in the Bicyle Tour of Colorado are also noteworthy. The SCC has provided a great environment of fun and fitness for me, a 28 year Schlumberger veteran. I have served as the club Captain, Ride Coordinator, and now the Treasurer.
- Ride Coordinator: Patrick Thompson I have been with Schlumberger for 17 years, working in Africa, the UK and North America. I am currently the Gulf Coast Marketing and Sales Manager based in our downtown Houston office. I have been very lucky in that I started in WesternGeco and made the move over to Oilfield Services in 2007 so have been able to see a very wide range of our businesses and technologies.
I have been riding since I got my first bike. I joined SCC in 1999 when I first relocated to Houston at the end of my field career. I rode my first MS-150 that year which was a huge challenge but yielded a tremendous sense of satisfaction to complete the adventure and raise money for a good cause. I have been riding consistently since then and really miss it if I have to take any kind of break at all, such as for work commitments. Luckily during the past couple of years I have travelled less so have been to get into shape concentrating on riding. I continue to ride for the health benefits (it’s nice to have an annual physical when the results get better each year!) and to get out with great set of friends. I’m looking forward to the 2009 season and helping the club out as Ride Coordinator to give something back to the club after 10 years of great memories.
- SAG Coordinator: Greg Cudney I began my Schlumberger career with Dowell, as a Field Engineer in 1980 after graduating from Colorado State University. Schlumberger had a JV with Dow Chemical (the parent of Dowell) overseas and decided in 1984 to make the JV worldwide.
My family and I have had the fortune to live and work in many of the oilfields in the western US; Gulf Coast; and internationally in Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. I am currently the Well Services segment Operations Support and QHSE Manager. Well Services provides the industry Hydraulic Fracturing, well bore Cementing and Coiled Tubing services. I am in my 29th year and looking forward to many more.
I began my cycling adventure in 2005: as my 50th birthday approached I realized I needed motivation to keep myself fit. Several of the current board members encouraged my cycling quest: Thanks to Neil Campbell and Randy Hansen. The 2009 MS150 will be my 4th and the BTC will be my 3rd week long Colorado Ride. I hope all of you receive as much enjoyment from the club as I do.

- Membership Coordinator: Neil Campbell I have enjoyed 29 fun-filled years with Schlumberger. When I turned 40 I took up running and in the next 5 years ran 9 Marathons, including the Boston Marathon in 2003. Like most other runners I soon suffered the dreaded cartilage deterioration in my left knee and regrettably had to give up running. It's like losing a best friend. A close buddy convinced me to try cycling as an alternative and found me a good second hand bike for cheap. I rode my first MS150 in 2005 and had a great time. I continued on with a number of other rides in the "off" season and finally broke down and bought a real bike late in 2005 so I could keep up with my peers. Riding with the SCC has allowed me to make a bunch of new friends and burn off lots of calories at the same time. I encourage all Schlumberger employees to come out and try the SCC. Once you do it for a while, you will be hooked.

- Clothing Coordinator: Danny Hlavinka I joined Schlumberger at the Gulf Freeway location in July 1985 and have spent 23 years with Big Blue since then. I have always been involved in many sports because I just can't sit still. My first exposure to road biking was because of encouragement (and a free bike) from my mother-in-law in 1992. She had been an avid biker for many years. I hooked up with about 17 other SLB folks for my first MS150 in 1993. That was the extent of the SLB "team" at that time. We spent weekday afternoons training around the old campus and down I-45 South. While it was enjoyable, I found greater enjoyment in playing softball with the Schlumberger Titans team. Even as late as 2002, I spent time working out and running as much as I could and really enjoyed it.
But time began to catch up with me as my body continued to talk back to me. Many years of softball wear and tear, 17 years of coaching baseball for my three sons, 4 arthroscopic knee surgeries, 3 complete knee reconstructions and 2 ruptured discs later - I found that I could no longer play softball much less run without considerable repercussions. I had to choose something that was low-to-no impact. That pretty much left walking, swimming and cycling. I already had a brief introduction to cycling while participating in the 1993, 1994, 1995 & 1997 MS150 rides with Schlumberger. I decided to resurrect my cycling efforts and have ridden every MS150 since 2003 with the SCC. Last year marked my 10th time to ride the MS150. In the last two years I have upped the ante on the cycling front. I am on track to cycle a total of 4,000 miles in 2008. Anyone that says cycling is not a sport or is not challenging doesn't know what they are talking about. It has become a great exercise routine and I have made many friends in the process. This is a great sport which I can continue to do for many years to come.

- Safety Coordinator: Billy Bealefield
- Ride Routes & Maps: Eric Schoen
I joined Schlumberger in 1982, and have worked in Ridgefield, Palo Alto, and Austin, and now work in Houston as an SIS software architect in the San Felipe building. (Note that all but my present SLB location are no longer in operation...) I was an avid cyclist in my youth, but lost my way until recently. I returned to cycling in 2003, and joined the SCC in 2004 upon moving to Houston. Cycling in the flatlands of Houston certainly makes conditioning a lot easier than on the hills of Austin! I can be found most Saturday mornings year-round cycling with the hardcore SCC bunch, and take my bike with me all
- Webmaster: Chris Watkins I've been doing application and database development for the last ten years, and am currently working at Baylor College of Medicine in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology.
I first heard about the MS150 back in the mid '80s, and it was always
something I thought I should do. Procrastination finally lost out to
curiosity and the desire to find something healthy to do, and my first time
on a road bike was the SCC's inaugural training ride of 2006. I was hooked
right there. Prior to that, most of my riding was around town on a mountain
bike, but the fresh air and the speed of the road bike is an incomparable
feeling that pulls me out of bed in the morning. In my spare time, I have
played in a variety of professional bands around Texas and Louisiana,
although the early mornings that come with riding have put a damper on the
late nights that come with being a rock star. I am not a Schlumberger
employee, but would happily consider any positions in Aberdeen, as I have
many friends there. :)

- Historian & Statistician: Bill Vandermeer Bill joined Schlumberger in 1975 as a wireline electrical design engineer. He started at the bottom of the engineering hierarchy and has steadily worked his way down from there. While furiously attempting to outrace technical obsolescence, he has participated in the design of several resistivity and magnetic resonance tools including: IRT-Q, DIT-D, MLT-A, DIT-EB, AIT-B, CMR, MRX, SAIT, ARC3 and iFlex IDFR.
Bill has been an active member of the Schlumberger Cycling Club for the last 10 years and has participated in 7 MS150’s. He has served the SCC in a variety of capacities including: training coordinator, map maker, historian, statistician and gadfly.
Bill and his sainted wife, Carolyn, have been married for 37 years and have three grown children: Randall, Tim and Diana. Randall designs offshore pipelines and pipeline installations for OPE. Diana is a fourth grade teacher in the Goose Creek Independent School District where she was nominated for the Disney Teacher of the Year Award. Tim is a firefighter in Austin. Tim taught fifth grade for two years but decided he wanted to get into something less dangerous.

- Camp-out Coordinator: Jim Mayes
I joined Schlumberger Well Services in 1988 as Development Engineer with the FEWD Task Force working initially on the CDN Ultrasonic Caliper and the LWD Depth System. After we all joined Anadrill I designed the acquisition system for the ISONIC EXP, the controller and memory board for the ADN, RAB and ISONIC tools and then the acquisition system for the ISONIC ENP. In 1994 I was transferred to the Technical Support group as Manager of Electrical Systems, which subsequently became Common Products and Standardization with the formation of SPC. After 7 years I joined the Telemetry and Surveying group as High-Pressure, High-Temperature MWD Manager.
- Communication: Gena Smoot
When I first heard about the MS150 I thought, “Those people are nuts… but what a great Marketing opportunity for FMC (my former employer).” Our company consistently spent money on charity organizations that didn’t come near to providing the benefits to not only those receiving the funds, but also the people out there raising the money. I saw in the faces of the volunteers and the riders the excitement, the bond, and the determination to truly find a cure for people in our own community. I fought for 2 years to get my company to form a team, and finally I reached the right person within our top management who had a sister affected by MS. The first year, we had 77 riders and raised $75K! It was a huge success and the company continues to ride. That first year, I was too busy being team captain to ride on any of the training rides, I hadn’t even touched a road bike since I was a kid on my mom’s 10-speed that was entirely too tall for me. The week before the ride, our team had the 62 mile ride. I was offered a bike that belonged to the daughter of one of our riders. Her dad lived here and had the bike, and she needed it in Austin. Sounded like fate to me! I jumped at the chance. I got on that bike and rode for 59 miles! (yes, I whimped out 3 miles from the end). The next week, I was pedaling to Austin with the rest of the team. I cried when I crossed the finish line. That was in 2004. I’ve been hooked ever since. (and I still cry everytime I cross that finish line) Of course, now I train, I saved 4 hours a day – a total of 8 hours off my time - the second year I rode… all because I trained! When I joined Schlumberger in Nov. 2006, the first social club I was told about was the Cycling Club. I attended the 2007 MS150 kickoff meeting and volunteered to help out. I am amazed at the Schlumberger team’s organization and safety and I am proud to be a part of such an awesome group of folks.
